Why is a low temperature charge cut-off feature important?

Charging a frozen lithium battery will damage the cells. This battery can still be used in temperatures of – 4F to 130F and will have more discharge energy than a lead acid battery at those temperatures. This BMS low temperature protection prevents charging and damage to the cells until the battery warms up.

Why is a BMS important?

AMPS batteries use a high quality BMS? Battery Management System. The BMS protects the batteries and cells from failure. This includes low temperature charge protection, low voltage protection, high voltage protection, high current discharge protection, charge voltage cut-off protection, BMS high temperature protection, cell balancing and short circuit protection. The AMPS BMS also allows for connecting in series (to increase voltage) or in parallel (to increase amp hour capacity). Beware of batteries that cannot connect in series or parallel.

Why is the Warranty important?

AMPS offers a 12 Year Warranty – what that means is the battery and BMS to be free of defects in material or workmanship for the life of the battery. Depending on usage, these batteries can last up to 20 years. Beware of companies that offer short term warranties. There are a lot of low quality BMS and second grade cells available. Second grade batteries often have been used in medical or industrial applications and repurposed. They may have used 50% of the cycle life but will still maintain good voltage and capacity (the beauty of lithium batteries). However, they will not last, hence the short term warranty. Low quality BMS are cheap and do not last.

Why is using prismatic cells important?

AMPS uses high quality, new prismatic cells only. There are 3 basic types of LFP cells – prismatic, cylindrical and pouch. Prismatic are large block shaped cells. They are more energy dense (more Ah), so fewer are used and are generally bolted together. Prismatic cells are the best choice for deep cycle batteries because of the simplicity and energy density.

Cylindrical are smaller (like a D cell) and a large number are cobbled and welded together to create a battery. Lots of little batteries welded together means more potential failure points but a failed cell is less noticeable. Pouch cells are what you have in your cell phone. Like Cylindrical cells, there are numerous pouches which are stacked together. They are best for low charge and discharge applications.

Why are copper terminals important?

AMPS uses copper alloy terminals. Most other batteries use bronze, brass, stainless steel or lead terminals. The differences in electrical conductivity of various materials used in electrical products are often not well understood. Making assumptions about the electrical conductivity of a material can lead to disastrous results. The lower the conductivity, the higher the resistance. Heat is the result of high resistance and higher amps. If the resistance and the amps are high enough – things can melt and catch fire.

Perhaps the most common form of this error is the substitution of stainless steel, brass or bronze for copper in electrical applications. Brass is only 28% as conductive as copper. Nickel is 22%. Steel is 15%. Some bronzes are as low as 7% as conductive as copper!

Is the AMPS Lithium Battery safe?

AMPS uses the Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) also called Lithium Ferro Phosphate (LFP) chemistry in the batteries.

Lithium Titanate (Li2TiO3) – LTO and Lithium Iron Phosphate are the safest lithium chemistries. LFP and LTO cells are not subject to thermal runaway explosion and fire like other chemistries, LFP is significantly less expensive than LTO. LFP cells are the brawn of the battery providing long life, consistent energy and safety. Major auto manufacturers, such as Tesla have changed from other more dangerous chemistries to LFP for just these reasons.

 

Superior battery construction and protection

AMPS batteries use durable, long lasting, larger prismatic cells and solid copper connections instead of numerous, small cylindrical or pouch type cells welded together. AMPS batteries are made with new Grade A quality cells and BMS (battery management system.  AMPS Warranty covers Cells and BMS from defects.

AMPS 190Ah lithium battery with a nominal 12.8V The BMS allows the lithium battery to be safely discharged 100% = 2432 usable watts. A 90% discharge has 171 usable amps and provides 2188 usable watts. (over 2 kilowatts of energy) with 19Ah and over 218 watts remaining.

 

Costs less money per watt!!! With 3 to 10 times the life!

Lead Acid/AGM batteries have 300 to 1000 cycle life depending on they type and manufacturer. The saying “You get what you pay for” is true.

190Ah with 12V nominal voltage Such as an AGM/Lead Acid battery is not the same as 12V 190Ah with 12.8V nominal voltage. Both will work just fine in a 12 volt system. The higher the nominal voltage, the less amps (and heat) it will take to generate the energy (watts) to run equipment. Equipment such as compressors, motors and pumps run better and cooler at higher voltage which can extend their life. Nominal voltage is the average output voltage of the battery.

The formula used to determine watts is: watts = amp hours x nominal voltage.

Compare to Lifeline GPL-31XT AGM Sealed Battery 12V 125Ah battery:

AMPS lithium battery can be discharged 100% without damage.

50% is the maximum recommended discharge without damage for AGM / lead acid batteries per Lifeline AGM / lead acid battery tech manual.

You will need over (3) Group 31 AGM batteries to have more usable energy (1530Wh @ 50% DOD = 750 Wh x 3 = 2250Wh) than (1) AMPS 190Ah (2432Wh) lithium battery! And you can expect to have to replace The AGM batteries in a few years!

The Lifeline might last 4-5 years if constantly used and properly maintained.  Lithium batteries will last 3 to 5 times longer than most AGM batteries.

Go online and check out the cost of (3) AGM Group 31 batteries which would provide 750Wh and compare them to the cost of an AMPS 190Ah lithium battery which provides 2432Wh.

The less expensive, lower quality batteries available can have cycle life of as little as 300 cycles. AMPS lithium batteries will last over 10 times longer than these batteries!

Lithium batteries lasts longer and cost less per usable watt. You save money!!

The lithium battery voltage stays at 13.2 to to 12.8 volts throughout discharge cycle (up to 80-90% discharge) means more power! Equipment, motors, pumps, refrigeration, etc. run more efficiently.

The D250/500 BMS means battery is capable of a continuous discharge of 250 amps with a surge peak of 500 amps..

The C150/250 BMS means battery is capable of taking a recommended ≤ 100 amp charge but can take up to a 250 amp charge. The higher charge will reduce the cycle life.

This is important because most alternators can produce 80 to 100 amps when charging. Do not buy a battery with an inadequate BMS or you will kill it!

AMPS 190Ah battery can be discharged up to 100% which means you can safely use 190Ah of energy. This is not recommended because when the lights go out, they are out. Lead acid batteries should not be discharged below 50% or it will significantly reduce the life expectancy per the Lifeline product manual.

– Faster Charging!

Lithium batteries have a 99% charging efficiency. Every amp that goes in is stored. The BMS allows constant voltage and constant current. Constant voltage is up to 14.6 volts. Constant current is the incoming amps, the recommended current for AMPS 190Ah lithium battery is ≤ 100 Amps. The maximum current charge is 250 amps. The BMS monitors the charge cycle and cuts off the charge when the battery is full. The BMS prevents over charging.  A fully discharged AMPS 190Ah lithium battery can be fully charged at the recommended 100 amps in under 2 hours! 

AGM / lead acid batteries have a charge efficiency of 85% which decreases as the battery ages. 15% of the charging amps are lost to the chemical conversion and hydrogen gas production. AGM / lead acid batteries have an initial high amp bulk charge for the first 80% of battery Ah capacity and then throttles down the absorption stage amp input for the last 20% of the battery Ah capacity. This means that the battery will take a very long time to fully charge when compared to AMPS lithium battery.

Sometimes solar is just not enough to charge the batteries and you must rely on some kind of generated power.

If you run the engine or a generator, then the lithium battery bank will charge up much faster meaning you do not have to run it so long.

By having less run time, you save on fuel and maintenance. The less often you have to change oil and filters because you do not have to run your equipment is money in your pocket.

Before you buy a lithium battery – check the specs. Not all lithium batteries are the same!!

Check the chemistry type. If it is not Lithium Iron Phosphate LiFePO4 / LFP, then you likely getting a more dangerous chemistry with less cycle life.

Some offer pouch cells (like those in a cell phone) or a bunch of little cells welded together. This can limit the battery ability to connect in series or parallel. Also, the more cells and connections provide for more potential failure points due to vibration and movement. AMPS use the larger prismatic cells and bolted solid copper connections.

Some offers are battery cells only – you need a BMS (battery management system) to protect the cells from excessive charge/discharge which will damage them. You need a quality BMS that will handle the maximum combined load of all that stuff you turn on. A good quality BMS will handle periodic excessive loads but it will stress the BMS and potentially cause eventual BMS failure.

The BMS determines the charge/discharge capacity of a battery. The charge and discharge capacities may not be the same. A lithium battery listed with a 100A BMS does not tell the whole story. A 100A BMS generally means a continuous discharge of 100A. Or it could mean a discharge peak of 100A. It is important to also know the BMS discharge and charge capacity. Usually there is a recommended and maximum charge capacity. A BMS may have a continuous discharge of 100A but only a maximum charge capacity of 50A. You need to know these specs.

Most alternators and charging systems found in RVs, automobiles and boats will exceed 50 amps. Many do-it-yourselfers have discovered that many stand-alone BMS purchased off Ebay, etc. are of questionable quality. AMPS Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries provide a quality, built-in BMS.

A 12V nominal voltage is not the same as a 12.8V nominal voltage. Both will work just fine in a 12 volt system. Simply, a 12 volt nominal is a battery that has an average discharge voltage of 12 volts. AMPS lithium batteries maintain a constant higher 12.8 voltage which makes stuff run better.

Lead acid batteries are nominal 12 volts and at a 50% discharge are around 12-12.2 volts.

AMPS Lithium batteries have 12.8 nominal volts and maintain a discharge voltage of over 12.8 volts throughout the majority of the discharge cycle. BEWARE! Some lithium batteries offer a 12V nominal – this is not the same thing! Not all lithium batteries are the same.

The BMS (battery management system) limits the charge and discharge abilities of the battery. The continuous charge or discharge amperage rate indicates the BMS capacity.

Lithium iron phosphate batteries are a popular way to power recreational and commercial boats, RVs, solar energy systems and other applications that require reliable, long lasting, quick charging and safe batteries. Although it costs a little more upfront, lithium provides superior longevity, efficiency and safety benefits compared to traditional, lead acid batteries.

 

Compare amp hour to usable amp hour combined with cycle life – AMPS lithium batteries cost less with the added benefit that you will not need to replace them every 3 to 5 years!!

The Lifeline AGM battery may last 1000 cycles (generally less) which means that the battery will need to be replaced 3 times (or more) of the same life as a lithium battery. That is moving a lot of heavy batteries around.

Lithium batteries last 3000 to 5000 cycles under the same conditions and also maintain a consistent, higher discharge voltage over the course of the discharge. (50% DOD (depth of discharge) = 12.8V or more).

Whereas the discharge voltage in lead acid batteries drops with the state of charge (50% DOD = 12-12.2V or less, 80% DOD = 11.7V or less – per Lifeline AGM manual)

Lead based batteries vary in how long they last. It can be anywhere between 400 to 1000 cycles. Quality brands like Trojan and Lifeline lead based batteries are not cheap. They cost more because they are made of better materials and have a longer life. With up to 1000 cycle life, these quality AGM batteries can offer years of service.

Lead acid/AGM batteries should not be discharged below 50% or it will significantly reduce the life expectancy of lead acid batteries. They need to be charged to 100% on a regular (preferably daily) basis to prevent lead sulfation build up. If the charge remains below 90% for any period, lead sulfate crystals will form on the plates and permanently damage the battery and reduce cycle life.

All batteries have a lifetime holding capacity for a finite amount of energy. Lithium batteries just happen to be 5 to 10 times that of lead acid batteries. In many cases, this could be the last battery you ever buy.

Lithium batteries are perceived to cost too much. On a per usable watt basis, lithium batteries are competitive and if you consider the replacement costs over time, lithium batteries are a bargain. If you put an AMPS Lithium battery next to an AGM battery, they look a lot alike. That is where similarities end.

A single AMPS 190Ah lithium battery can be discharged up to 100%. If the lithium battery was discharged 50% every day for 365 days for 20 years, that is a total 7400 days = 3500 cycles. Lithium batteries can cycles depend on Depth of Discharge (DOD). Lithium batteries last longest if kept charged 40-80% and this discourages dendrite formation.

A LFP lithium battery end of life is considered when the battery holds less than 80% of the original charge. So, a 190Ah battery will still have 152Ah at the “end of life”. It is still a perfectly good battery and can be still used, it will just discharge sooner because of the lower Ah. It will still have as much usable energy as 2 new Lifeline GPL-31XT AGM Sealed Battery 12V 125Ah batteries (125Ah @ 50% usable = 62.5Ah x 2 = 125Ah usable energy).

AMPS lithium battery can be discharged 100% without damage. However, this will reduce cycle life. With thousands of cycle life, that usually is not a concern. If a lithium battery is maintained between 40 to 80%, it theoretically last indefinitely. Dendrite formation in lithium cells is much like lead sulfate crystals in lead acid / AGM batteries. Dendrites form when the batteries sit unused at over an 80% charge. Lithium batteries are happiest when they are used.

Lithium batteries are hassle free. No Maintenance. No venting of explosive or corrosive gases. Lithium batteries do not vent gas and can be kept in sealed environments.

AGM batteries are VLRA (valve regulated lead acid) and can vent explosive hydrogen gas when over charged.

Flooded Lead Acid (FLA) vent corrosive and explosive gas as part of the charging process. Regular maintenance is needed to maintain life including adding water and cleaning battery terminals.
